Cruise Excursions on 4-Day Ensenada and Catalina Itineraries

For many local families, a 4-day cruise on Royal Caribbean or Disney Cruise Line is the perfect introduction to cruising. These short getaways depart from Southern California and visit Catalina Island, Ensenada, plus a relaxing day at sea. While the order of the stops may vary, the itinerary itself remains consistent. One of the items first-time cruisers worry about most is their cruise excursions. So, here’s some help.

Now, let’s talk about Ensenada. It may not be the most glamorous port in the world, but it’s a key stop due to federal regulations requiring foreign-flagged ships to visit an international port when starting and ending in the U.S. So whether you’re cruising to Alaska (hello, Vancouver or Victoria!) or heading out from Southern California, a foreign port is required. Ensenada is a staple — unless you’re on a longer 7-day Cabo itinerary.

Here’s the thing: many people skip getting off the ship altogether, especially if this isn’t their first time on this route. Honestly, on a short 4-day cruise, you don’t need to cram in too much with all the great activities offered on the ship. One solid cruise excursion can be enough to feel like you’ve explored while leaving plenty of time to enjoy everything the ship has to offer. When I take this cruise, I often don’t even bother leaving the ship. That said, if you’re itching to explore, here are my recommendations for Ensenada and Catalina — including what to skip.

Important Note About Age Restrictions
Royal Caribbean’s zip line is restricted to ages 14+, and the ATV tour is for ages 21+ only. Similarly, the Escape Room onboard is 12+, which isn’t always ideal for families with younger kids. If you’re interested in zip lining, I recommend booking through a third party, such as the one at Las Cañadas.

Also, keep in mind that Las Cañadas activities require a 45-minute transfer each way, so it’s not a quick step off the ship into action. However, once you’re there, these adventures are well worth it. If you’re eager to say you’ve experienced Mexico, these are some of your best options.

1. Zip Line Adventure
For thrill-seekers, I highly recommend the zip line at Las Cañadas. This spot is an adventure paradise, and the zip line is consistently rated a highlight. If zip lining isn’t for everyone in your group, no worries! There are hiking options for those who want to keep their feet on the ground. Just keep in mind that this excursion involves a 45-minute transfer each way.

2. ATV Fun for All Ages
Looking for a family-friendly ATV adventure? This tour is a great mix of value and excitement. Kids under 16 can ride as passengers with a quick waiver signed, making it a good option for families with teens or tweens.

3. Cruise-Recommended Horseback Riding
If you’re booking through the cruise line, horseback riding on the beach is a fantastic option. It’s beginner-friendly, budget-friendly (especially if you use onboard credits), and the guides are great with kids. A relaxing ride along the shore is a perfect way to soak in some local scenery.

Avoid: Beach outings and resort pools. Southern California’s beaches are better and our neighborhood pools are better. These excursions often involve long drives to reach the preferred spots. Instead, treat yourself to a cabana on the ship and enjoy a leisurely day onboard.

Catalina Cruise Excursions

Catalina is a charming stop, but keep in mind that getting to shore usually requires a tender, which can take up valuable time. If you’ve never been, there are some fun options to explore. However, my general advice is to skip cruise excursions on Catalina during a cruise and plan a dedicated weekend trip to the island instead.

1. Zip Lining
The zip line on Catalina is a standout experience, with options for ages 5 and up. It’s highly rated and well-organized — definitely worth considering if the weather is on your side.

2. Guided Golf Cart Tour of Avalon
Golf carts make exploring Catalina a breeze! This private guided tour hits local landmarks like Pebbly Beach, the Inn at Mt. Ada, and the iconic Casino building, with plenty of photo stops and a chance to feed the fish.

Avoid: The semi-submarine tours. They’re pricey for what they offer, and you won’t see anything here you couldn’t experience elsewhere for less. Plus, reviews are mixed, so it’s a gamble.

A Final Word of Advice

Whatever you decide to do, don’t miss the ship! Whether you book through the cruise line or a private company, always allow plenty of time to return from your cruise excursions. Missing the ship can turn into an expensive, stressful ordeal, especially in a foreign port.

So, enjoy your time, whether you’re zip lining, relaxing in a cabana, or just soaking up the sea breeze onboard. Happy cruising!
